A glimpse into history and a beautiful view is here at the Transfiguration of Our Lord Russian Orthodox Church. Another stop that if you're driving too fast you'll miss it. Overlooking Deep Creek this church sits up high. You'll spot different birds here including Bald Eagles. The Church was under maintenance, but hopefully will be ready for visitors by now. Beautiful little church, with increadible view of volcanoes on the background. There is not much to do, but to see this beauty when the weather is nice is worth coming! Ninilchik AK Russian Orthodox Church This beautiful & well preserved landmark has been a part of my life since I was a child. The Village of Ninilchik is home to the children of Russian, Native Alaskan, & eastern European people. Many of my family's friends, in laws, cousins, aunts etc have been & are still being buried there. Originally you had to walk up the hill from village to get to the church. Boats & float planes were the only way to reach Ninilchik prior to the Sterling Highway being created. Many times I've "drudged" up that hill for weddings & holy days. The original school house was next to the church in the early 1900s. My grandmother was the 2nd teacher there. I have pictures of the building where she is posed with a rifle. A much needed tool! Please remember that this is a church that is still in use & beloved by people. Respect them & their ancestors. Old russian church near an indian village. One of the oldest places to visit. Historic place.
